Looks like a pretty kickass game to me. I think I might have to buy the Wii version.

This looks like the game I wish existed back when I was playing Quake 2.

Also they get style points for this commercial:

(saw it last night during the first Bay Transformers on cable)

Exactly. I saw that when I was watching Sci Fi channel - that's when I was first introduced for to the game and decided I had to own it. I've been less then impressed with the other Transformers games but this one seems to be at a whole nother level.

Seems loosely based on that War Within series from Dreamwave.

From what I've seen it looks like War Within and the original cartoon are it's chief inspirations, but it draws more closely on the cartoon as far as continuity goes. In this Optimus starts off as a soldier and then somehow later becomes Prime, whereas in WW he was a data analyst, got appointed as Prime, and only after that learned to be a soldier and leader. Interestingly the IDW comics lately have been pushing the Optimus-as-soldier angle so maybe they're retconning in this game. ..or maybe they both took the cue from Animated.

I like to ignore how Dreamwave dropped the soldier background for Optimus - of course the cartoon did to a degree as well by having him be Orion Pax prior to being rebuilt.

Nonetheless the original comic background of him being a soldier who rose through the ranks and became the first military Prime seems the most fitting for him. That makes the loyalty his soldiers show for him deserving. That's one thing the comic had right...

I do like what Dreamwave did with Megatron and Grimmlock's origins however.

But back to the game, the fact that the seperate Autobot and Decepticon stories tie together is refreshing.

I had a very brief spin on it and have mostly watched those-who-know-what-they're-doing play. While much TF richness has been injected in the creativity department the gameplay itself is nothing to write home about.

That said it still looks and feels really really cool.

If it had a decent cover system and wasn't published by Activision, it would have been a perfect game. I still enjoyed it. Need to get around to finishing the Autobot campaign, though.

Got the Wii version of it. It was definitely developed by true Transformers fans.

The format isn't the greatest ever but the way it delves into the Gen 1 back story makes time spent playing it well worth while.
